Hosting·Maintenance

Website and email hosting, with a person on the other end.

UK servers running on 100% renewable power, with a worldwide CDN, run from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. SSL, Timeline Backups, malware scanning and five mailboxes on every account - looked after by the business that built the site.

What hosting costs, and what you get

Hosting is the line on the invoice nobody thinks about until the morning it stops working. One plan, the same price for everyone - and none of it is a chargeable upgrade, the way it so often is with other hosts.

Ninety-four per cent of our long-term clients are still here after five years. The longest has been with us fifteen.

Fair use, backups, renewal and what happens if hosting ends are covered in our hosting terms.

As fast in Sydney as in Southend

The servers are in the UK, and every account sits behind a worldwide CDN. Pages are cached at edge nodes around the world rather than fetched from Essex each time somebody asks for one, so a visitor in Bangkok or Perth is served by a machine near them.

It matters more than it sounds. Some of our longest-standing clients are nowhere near Essex - a sports bar on a Thai island or a musician in the United States - the distance has never been the thing that slowed their sites down.

Distance is only half of it. Most hosting puts a site on one machine and gives it a share of that machine, so when a busy morning arrives - the local paper picks something up, a newsletter goes out, a post does better than anyone expected - the share runs out and the visitor gets an error page instead of the thing they came for. This platform does not work that way. A site draws on the whole platform rather than one server, and as demand climbs it spreads onto more of them on its own, without anybody asking. The industry calls it autoscaling. What it means for you is that the busiest morning of the year is the one you never hear about.

Those servers run on 100% renewable power, and the data centres behind them run at a PUE of 1.2 - a measure of how little electricity goes anywhere other than the servers themselves.

Email hosting, on the same account

Five email addresses are included with every hosting account, and there is room to add more whenever the business grows. Unlimited email forwarders, autoresponders and catchall ability come with it. Additional mailboxes beyond the five are £5 a month.

Website and email in one place. With your control panel access you can set up any unused email addresses whenever you wish. Splitting services across two suppliers is how a business ends up being told the problem is at the other end. Keep it simple!

Backups that include the email

Timeline Backups cover the site files, the databases and every email account on the package. The mailboxes are the part worth saying out loud: a website can be rebuilt from the design files, and fifteen years of a business's correspondence cannot.

They sit somewhere other than the server they are backing up, which is the only arrangement worth having.

Website maintenance, charged per update not per month

WordPress core, the theme and every plugin brought up to date, then the site checked over afterwards. The price follows what happens if something breaks, not how big the site is.

WordPress can apply its own core updates automatically, and the hosting will do that if you want it to. We would rather do it ourselves - an update that breaks something at two in the morning takes your site down until somebody notices, and it should not be a customer who notices first.

How often is your call. Most sites suit quarterly - that is £160 a year on a brochure site, £360 for a shop tested in a staging environment.

These are the figures you pay. There is no VAT to add to them.

We got Andy at Bang! Graphics to create our wedding invites and they are amazing. We weren't very good at giving him ideas - he asked us a set of questions to get an idea of what we wanted, but we weren't completely sure ourselves, so we were quite vague.

Andy didn't have a lot to go on apart from a colour and a couple of images from Google that I liked, yet he managed to create a base for us to go from, which was lovely. Our theme was emerald green and the invites were perfect - not over the top. Andy also helped us out a lot with the wording too. We didn't actually change that much from his first draft as he pretty much nailed it first time!

Andy was incredibly patient and great to work with. We would definitely recommend him to anyone needing help designing something.

I can't recommend Andy and Bang! Graphics highly enough. He has helped me with several aspects of my business since start up, including designing my logo and letterhead, as well as creating and managing my website and web hosting.

What I particularly appreciate is how easy he is to deal with. Andy takes the time to understand what I'm looking for, is always happy to make changes or offer advice, and nothing ever feels like too much trouble. The finished work has always been professional and exactly what I was hoping for.

It's also great having someone I can rely on for everything from my branding and logo design through to my website and hosting, rather than having to deal with different people for each job.

If you're looking for someone friendly, reliable and genuinely good at what they do, I'd definitely recommend Andy.

Andy has been looking after my website for many years, following a recommendation from a colleague of mine, it's the best thing I've done! His devotion to website management is second to none; attention to detail being one of his many qualities.

Whenever he runs his regular security updates, he always tests my website then contacts me to let me know what he's done. When he gently suggested that my old aging website could do with a freshen up, he walked me through the entire process with the patience of a saint. He redesigned it within my budget and has made my new website look amazing. Andy very quickly recognised that I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to anything computer related and has very kindly been to my house to streamline my emails on my laptop and phone. Whenever I've yelled for help, he's responded within the hour - often fixing the problem at the same time. Looking back through my emails to him, it seems all of my "sent" emails have the words "thank you so much". Do what I did - get Andy to sort your website out, you won't regret it.

Andy has been working on several aspects of our chutney business matters and his work has been exemplary! Andy's web design with a logo to our specification and appropriate choice of colors and images is awesome and has been commented on by several family members and friends.

We also have a personalized email which was set up by Andy. Although Andy doesn't usually do designs for labels, he did ours and in fact the company that printed the labels were very impressed with the design! Andy went a step further and designed our business cards and compliment slips to make a lasting impression. We will recommend Andy/Bang Graphics with absolutely no hesitation!

Andy re-designed our Society's website. On time and on budget. From the beginning he was meticulous in making sure he had understood the brief.

He offered very sensible advice and was able to talk in "layman's language". He is very patient! We had to overcome some issues with the integration of two sites which meant some extra hurdles and Andy took the time to make sure he had found the correct solution. He is a perfectionist but if something is going to overrun the budget he is scrupulous about referring back before he incurs extra expense. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him.

Hosting questions

What does hosting include?

SSL, Daily Timeline Backups covering the site files, databases and every email account, server maintenance, malware scans, uptime monitoring that checks the site every five minutes, five email accounts, server side optimisation of CSS, JS and images, server side security headers, and a worldwide CDN - on every account, as standard. WordPress hosting comes with a staging environment set up in just a few clicks along with the ability to add/remove users and make plugins or theme updates from the hosting control panel. Linux hosting allows for multi domain hosting and numerous useful apps to be installed on the server.

Can you move my site from my current host?

Yes - we offer free migration and can move your website and email over at no additional cost. Then we either give you hosting access or manage it for you.

Do I have to host with you?

No. If you have your own host we can put the site live there for you, although the aftercare is then theirs. Most clients take our hosting because the person who built the site is the one looking after it.

What about email?

Five email addresses at your own domain come with every base hosting account, with room to add more whenever the business grows (at £5 per month per inbox) - plus unlimited email forwarders, autoresponders and catchall ability.

Where is my site hosted?

On UK servers BUT with a worldwide CDN (Content Delivery Network) in front of them so pages load from a node near the visitor - as fast in Sydney as in Southend. The CDN ensures that your site is loaded quickly from wherever it's requested from, no need for local hosting. Every account is managed personally, if your have queries all you need to do is reach out and we will deal with it straight away.

Who do I call when something goes wrong?

The person who built the site - us! You get someone who already knows how your site is put together, which is usually the difference between a five minute fix and a five day one. Often you will not need to call. Every site we host is checked every five minutes, and an outage alerts us straight away - so sometimes the answer to "who do I call" is that we have already called you.

What actually gets backed up?

Site files, databases and every email account, on a rolling timeline - so there is always a good copy to go back to, not just last night's. This happens automatically as part of your hosting and is called "Timeline Backups". The data is saved somewhere safe, so if you hit a problem on your site or with your email - we have multiple options for you to revert to and get back online quickly. This is often an additional "bolt-on" cost with other hosting companies and we include it as standard.

What if I want to take it over myself?

You own the domain, the content and the site, and the logins are yours and will have been sent to you if you requested them. If you haven't yet, we can provide them at the point you need them. The hosting control panel, and the WordPress admin. If you wish to move the domain, there is an authorisation code we can provide to you. We look after it to save you the time and effort.

What is a maintenance plan, and what does it cost?

We offer different tiers for website maintenance based on the website, how complicated the build is and the amount of traffic it gets. The latter based on, can you cope with the site being offline for a small amount of time during an update ... or a longer period of time if there has been a problem? If no, then it would need to be moved to a staging environment. As for fees - £40 per update when performed on the live site, £90 in a staging environment, £120 if it is a complex site that requires a fair amount of testing. It is charged PER UPDATE not per month, although that may be the frequency you choose. On a WordPress website the core, theme and plugins are updated then checked over; how often is the client's choice. WordPress can update its own core automatically, and we can switch that on if you prefer. We generally do not, because an update that breaks something does it whether anybody is watching or not. Static sites are dependent on how they have been built and which technologies they use when it comes to the amount of updating and testing they may need. This can be discussed before we choose the kind of web build you may be getting.

How much is hosting?

Tiered pricing is not something we offer for web hosting. We provide the best we can for one price. £240 a year for a website. Sites with advanced functionality may need quoting separately, due to the extra work involved.

How much space do I get, and what if the site gets busy?

Our webspace is unmetered for a normal website, we have no gigabyte tier and no upgrade to buy. Getting busy is a separate question and it is handled separately. Your site does not sit on one machine with a fixed share of it to run out of - it draws on the whole platform, and when a lot of people arrive at once it spreads onto more servers by itself. That is what autoscaling means, and it is what stops a good day turning into an error page.
